Itinerary

Take your first stroll through Sweden’s capital and explore some of the many sights and tourist attractions.

The bike trip takes you along an ancient trade route that has existed since the Viking Age, skirting along Sweden’s third largest lake, Lake Mälar. On the way, you pass the World Heritage listed Drottningholm Palace. Here, right on the shore of Lake Mälar, the royal family grew up. Also located in the grounds is the Chinese Pavilion dating from the 18th century. You continue by short ferry trip in direction Södertälje. At Sturehov, located in eastern Lake Mälaren, it’s time for a late lunch. Södertälje, home of Scania is located south of Stockholm where the lake is connected to the Baltic Sea through the lock in Södertälje canal. Overnight stay in Södertälje.

Today you ride on small side roads to Gripsholm Castle. It houses the national portrait collection of over 4000 works that trace the portrait art from the 1400s and up to the present. The castle’s history goes back to the 1370s, when Bo Jonsson Grip built a castle on a promontory which, after several expansions became Gripsholm Castle. If you would like to extend your tour you cycle to island Selaön with runestones and cemetery rom the 15th century, built in the form of a ship.

Today’s tour takes you right into the middle of untouched and remote nature reserves, through the amazing scenery of Sörmland. At this spot countless rivers and lakes were formed due to vast tectonic movements. Nevertheless the altitude is never higher than 100m. Once you have mastered the hills you get rewarded with stunning views and a long descent. Your hotel is located beautifully at a lake in the countryside and completes this "green day" of your bike trip.

Your destination for the day is the idyllic Baltic Sea town of Trosa, which is also used as setting for many movies. Finish your day with a stroll through the picturesque village and enjoy the small alleys, red houses and wonderful views on the water. We recommend to try crabs, salmon or smoked fish in one of the nice, little restaurants for dinner.

Northward bound and a short ferry trip later you return to one of Stockholm’s many islands. The last part is covered by commuter train to Stockholm (not included). You will leave the train on the island of Södermalm and cycle the last kilometers back to your hotel. Enjoy your last overnight in the capital with a typical Swedish dinner in one of the numerous restaurants.

After breakfast your tour ends. We are happy to book extra nights for you.

Tour character

You cycle mostly on bike paths and gravel roads as well as forest tracks and side roads with less traffic through typical Swedish nature. To some extent there are simpler trail conditions with raw gravel. Flat to slightly hilly tour course.

Thanks we had a lovely time
Very lucky with the weather which was beautiful and made all the difference. Highlights - bikes good, lovely quiet roads mainly, Mariefred best stop followed by Trosa, hotels in both places very good, and nice choice of restaurants, lake and sea swimming, restaurant suggestions all good. You could add to notes possible swim/lunch spots as we had difficulty finding anywhere for picnic on way to Jarna - cycled off route into nature reserve lake which was lovely, but otherwise all lakesides privately owned. Also really enjoyed Stockholm and the islands. Will definitely do another cycling holiday!

Brilliant biking trip through Sweden!
Good routes on gravel tracks or quiet roads and some lovely towns to stop over. The movement of luggage from hotel to hotel worked perfectly. The routes were easy and clear (using GPX) and we would love to do another bike tour like this in the future.

Gorgeous scenery and very fun tour
This was my first self-guided bike tour, and I was traveling alone. The experience cycling in the countryside and through the smaller cities in Sweden was incredible. Because the tour leaves once each week, most days I was able to enjoy breakfast and short sections of the route with others on my trip. I made a friend out of one of the other solo travelers, and we ended up cycling together the last few days! Sweden is astounding--the rolling terrain, agriculture, and architecture were exactly what I needed on this trip. Everything felt cozy and welcoming to me. The tour documents recommended lunch stops or places to enjoy fika (breaks for coffee and cake!) for each day. Accommodations were terrific as well. I was able to use the turn-by-turn directions, maps, and GPS unit with no issues.
